PPL’s New VP to Tackle Growing Workforce Demand

PPL President & CEO Paul WilliaMayXiong_PPLms is excited to announce May Xiong as Vice President, Employment Readiness. As VP and member of PPL’s Executive Leadership Team, Xiong will provide strategic direction and leadership to PPL’s employment training, financial literacy, and education initiatives. She previously served as Senior Director and strategic leader of PPL’s employment training division for the last five and a half years, and has dedicated over 15 years of working in the nonprofit sector.

Xiong is well respected in the employment and training field locally and across the state, and has played a major role in the dynamic growth of PPL’s employment work in recent years. Most recently, Xiong led the expansion of PPL’s Career Pathway program, adding vital programs in Human Services, Office Administration, Healthcare, and Building Operations.

“Within PPL and in the community, May is well-regarded as a leader and collaborative colleague,” said Paul Williams, PPL President & CEO. “I am confident in her leadership and her continued contributions to expand and promote PPL’s vital employment readiness programs within our Twin Cities’ community that needs more qualified, skilled workers.”

According to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED), the retirement of baby boomers will drastically impact the state’s labor market. Across the region, workers 55 and over now hold one-quarter of all jobs, up from 17.5% 10 years ago (DEED, Minnesota Economic Trends, June 2016).

The expansion of PPL’s employment readiness offerings, led by Xiong, aims to fill the current and future workforce shortage, especially in hardest impacted industries. Combined, manufacturing, transportation and warehousing, and healthcare and education account for almost 45% of jobs held by workers 55 and older in Minnesota (DEED, Minnesota Economic Trends, June 2016).

“I’m excited and honored to continue working alongside PPL and our many constituents to ensure we are providing relevant training and preparation for tomorrow’s workforce,” said Xiong. “I can’t imagine doing this critical and important work anywhere else.”

Xiong succeeds Julie Brekke who resigned in November 2016 to become Executive Director of HIRED.
